Cricket Ireland has named Lorcan Tucker as the new permanent T20 International captain, with the wicketkeeper-batter set to lead a significantly revamped squad in a two-match series against India in Belfast starting June 26. The 29-year-old, who has earned 159 caps across all formats since his debut in 2016, previously served as a stand-in captain during the T20 World Cup earlier this year when Paul Stirling was sidelined by injury.
Tucker's appointment marks the beginning of a new cycle for Ireland as they build towards the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2028. The squad features several young players, with Matthew Hollard, Jai Moondra, and Reuben Wilson — who made his Test debut against New Zealand last month — all in contention for their first T20I caps. The team will be without several experienced campaigners due to injuries: Josh Little (stress fracture), Mark Adair (rectus muscle tear), Paul Stirling (torn calf muscle), Curtis Campher (hand fracture), Barry McCarthy (complete ACL tear), and Jordan Neill (shoulder and foot injury).
Speaking after training, Tucker expressed both pride and a sense of responsibility in taking on the role. "It's obviously a great privilege, and not one I thought would arrive when I started my career all those years ago," he said. "There's a feeling of responsibility to the playing group and organisation to represent them well and also to all the other captains who came before me." He outlined a leadership philosophy centered on honesty, empathy, and leading by example: "If I ask things of them, I'd want it to be clear that I'd asked those things of myself first."
Tucker's primary objective over the next two years is to integrate and develop emerging talent. "My main goal is to bring that next group of international cricketers through and into our system," he stated. "I know there are a group of young men waiting to create those same special moments for themselves." He acknowledged that balancing wicketkeeping, top-order batting, and captaincy is a "juggling act," but emphasised the importance of thorough preparation to play freely and act decisively.
Ireland's first assignment under Tucker sees them face reigning T20 champions India, a team he described as "an absolute powerhouse when it comes to T20 cricket." He added: "We are fortunate to be able to measure ourselves against them right at the start of our new cycle and there will be no tougher challenge for our group than what they will offer. I hope that we can spoil a few of those parties they might have planned and show that we also are here to make an impact." The two T20Is will be played at Belfast on June 26 and June 28, with both matches scheduled for a 1:30 PM local start.

Why This Matters
This appointment signals a strategic long-term shift for Irish cricket, which is investing in youth and stability ahead of the next T20 World Cup. For fans and analysts, the India series provides an early benchmark for a rebuilding side, while Tucker’s leadership style and the integration of uncapped players will shape Ireland’s competitiveness over the next four years.
