Chongqing Landslide: 8 Dead, 34 Missing After Buildings Buried

A massive landslide in Pengshui County, Chongqing, China, has left at least eight people dead and 34 missing. The disaster struck at 9:08 a.m. on July 17, 2026, when heavy rain triggered a collapse of a mountainside, burying more than 10 residential buildings. Ten people were rescued, and over 1,100 residents have been evacuated to safety. Rescue operations, involving over 800 personnel and 120 experts, have been hampered by persistent rainfall, unstable boulders, and the risk of secondary collapses. Local residents, including motorcyclists, have volunteered to deliver supplies and support rescue teams. China activated a Level-II national emergency response for geological disasters, and President Xi Jinping called for scientific search and rescue efforts to prevent further harm. The central government has allocated 30 million yuan for post-disaster infrastructure repairs.
