Russia Bans Georgian Wine and Beverages Over Safety Standards
Russia has banned the import of wines and beverages from several Georgian producers, citing non-compliance with safety and quality standards. Georgian officials dispute the rationale and hope for a review, while the move comes as Georgian wine exports to Russia reach a four-year low.
Quick Facts
- Russian ban on import and sale of Georgian beverages
- Ban covers wines, beer, Coca-Cola, and mineral water
- Decision cited non-compliance with safety and quality standards
- Georgian officials expressed confusion about ban rationale
- Georgian government investigating and seeking review

Russia's consumer health regulator Rosconsumsupervision has prohibited the import and sale of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages from multiple Georgian producers, citing non-compliance with safety and quality standards. The ban, effective from October 9, 2026, applies to wines from Teliani Valley, Tbilvino, Brothers Askaneli, and Vainmen; beer from Georgian Brewery Company; Coca-Cola produced in Georgia; and Nabeghlavi mineral water. The Eurasian Economic Commission endorsed the decision, stating the products failed to meet organoleptic, physicochemical, and safety requirements.
Georgian officials have disputed the ban's rationale. Parliamentary Speaker Shalva Papuashvili stated the decision targets specific companies rather than Georgia's wine industry as a whole and expressed confusion about the underlying grounds. He told reporters the Georgian government is investigating the matter and hopes the restriction will be reconsidered. Prime Minister remarks, reported by Georgian Public Broadcaster, indicate Tbilisi is working with Russia to address the issue, though officials acknowledged trade with Russia carries inherent risks.
The ban coincides with a significant decline in Georgian wine exports to Russia. In January–August 2026, Georgia exported 34,898 tonnes of wine valued at $102.2 million to Russia—the lowest figure in four years. Compared to the same period in 2023, exports fell 8.8% by value and 15.6% by volume. Overall, Georgia's wine exports declined 2.7% in value and 7% in volume year-over-year (2025 to 2026), though Russia remains the largest market for Georgian wine. Coca-Cola Bottlers Georgia clarified that the company does not directly supply Russia; rather, wholesale buyers purchase and export the product independently.
Why This Matters
Russia's import ban directly affects Georgian wine producers and beverage manufacturers, with Georgian wine exports to Russia already at four-year lows (34,898 tonnes valued at $102.2 million in January–August 2026, down 15.6% by volume year-on-year). Wine is Georgia's largest agricultural export to Russia, which accounts for the majority of Georgian wine sales globally. The ban removes market access for named producers—Teliani Valley, Tbilvino, Brothers Askaneli, Vainmen, Georgian Brewery Company—and Georgian-produced Coca-Cola, pending outcome of Georgian government requests for review. Bilateral trade between the two countries totaled over $2 billion in the same period, with Georgia's total exports at $500.7 million; continued restrictions could widen the trade imbalance.
