Kerala Implements Partial Power Cuts from June 16-30 Due to El Niño Impact

Kerala has reintroduced partial power cuts beginning June 16 through June 30, as the state faces a significant electricity shortage caused by the El Niño phenomenon affecting weather patterns across the Pacific region. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) announced that the state will experience a 900-megawatt shortfall in power supply. The restrictions will be implemented as limited cuts between 6 PM and midnight during this period.

The power crisis stems from multiple converging factors. El Niño-driven higher temperatures have increased electricity demand significantly, with power consumption rising by 10 million units beyond expected levels. Peak demand has reached approximately 4,900 megawatts. Additionally, despite the onset of monsoon season, rainfall has not strengthened as anticipated, limiting hydroelectric generation—a crucial source for Kerala's electricity supply. The state must also repay electricity borrowed from neighbouring states in March and April, beginning June 16, further constraining available power.

Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph convened a high-level meeting to assess the situation and authorized KSEB to implement necessary restrictions to ensure grid stability. The board has been directed to procure maximum power through day-ahead contracts. KSEB reported that limited power restrictions were already imposed in parts of the state on the night of June 16 (9 PM to midnight), with further restrictions expected as conditions warrant. The board has indicated that restrictions may be expanded if the electricity shortage intensifies beyond current projections.
