A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baqen County in Nagqu City, in China's Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet), at 10:33 p.m. Beijing Time on October 22, 2026. The epicenter was located in Maru Township at coordinates 32.40 degrees north latitude and 93.79 degrees east longitude, approximately 70 kilometers from the county seat and about 190 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu city. The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) measured the quake's depth at 10 kilometers, though some sources reported depths between 10 and 18 kilometers.
According to local authorities, the earthquake killed at least 16 people and injured 32 others, with 11 in serious condition and 21 with minor injuries. Over 300 homes collapsed in the affected area. Power and telecommunications services were disrupted in the county seat, and cracks appeared in buildings including the Maru Township government office. The mountainous, sparsely populated region lies at high altitude in northern Tibet, approximately 390 kilometers northeast of the regional capital Lhasa.
Xizang Autonomous Region activated a Level-II earthquake disaster emergency response, while China's State Council earthquake relief headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management activated a Level-IV response. More than 300 police officers and 347 fire and rescue personnel were deployed to the epicenter and affected areas for search and rescue operations. Emergency teams established temporary shelters and tents for displaced residents while conducting damage assessments and relief work.
A secondary 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck Zadoi County in Qinghai Province at 11:12 p.m. the same evening, near the border with Baqen County. Strong tremors were felt in townships along the border, with cracks reported in some houses, though no building collapses or casualties were reported from this aftershock.
Why This Matters
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake in a sparsely populated mountainous region of northern Tibet has killed 16 people and damaged over 300 homes, disrupting power and telecommunications infrastructure. The seismic event triggered deployment of more than 600 emergency personnel and activation of multi-level disaster response protocols by China's Xizang Autonomous Region and State Council, affecting rescue, shelter, and infrastructure recovery operations across a 70-kilometer radius from the county seat. A secondary 4.3-magnitude earthquake in adjacent Qinghai Province within 40 minutes compounds immediate response demands and complicates damage assessment timelines.
