Cross River Deputy Governor Urges National Boundary Commission to Expedite Boundary Demarcation

Peter Odey, Deputy Governor of Cross River State and Chairman of the State Boundary Committee, has called on the National Boundary Commission to intensify efforts toward the prompt demarcation of boundaries in the state and across Nigeria. Speaking at a high-level national workshop on Border Security, Resilience, and Cross-Border Cooperation in Abuja on Monday, Odey emphasized that resolving boundary disputes is essential to prevent recurring conflicts and foster peaceful coexistence among neighboring states and along international borders.

Odey highlighted that effective border governance is critical to Nigeria's security, stability, and socio-economic development, noting that countries worldwide are increasingly adopting collaborative approaches to managing border-related challenges. He underscored the workshop's timeliness and strategic significance in addressing these issues, stressing that it promotes peaceful coexistence and sustainable development in border communities.

The Deputy Governor drew specific attention to lingering boundary disputes involving Cross River State and its neighboring states, including Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Benue, and Abia. He referenced recent boundary-related tensions, including reported invasions by Cameroonian soldiers in Danare, Boki Local Government Area, and unresolved matters concerning the Bakassi Peninsula. Odey lamented that these unresolved disputes pose significant challenges to peace, security, and development in affected communities.

Odey stressed the need for urgent and coordinated action to properly define and demarcate boundaries to prevent recurring tensions. He affirmed that Governor Bassey Otu's administration remains committed to promoting peace, security, and inclusive development, particularly in communities located along the state's boundaries. As a border state, he noted, Cross River appreciates the strategic importance of effective border governance and cross-border collaboration in line with the governor's People's First agenda. Odey urged the National Boundary Commission to fulfill its statutory responsibility by ensuring proper and timely boundary demarcation across all affected areas.
