Adolis García, the Cuban outfielder for the Philadelphia Phillies, will miss the remainder of the 2026 season due to a latissimus dorsi injury requiring surgery. The Phillies announced Thursday that García will undergo lat repair surgery on Wednesday, with an estimated recovery period of six to eight months that should allow him to be ready for the start of the 2027 season.
The 33-year-old García signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Phillies in December after spending six seasons with the Texas Rangers. A two-time All-Star who began his career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018, García had appeared in 67 games this season, batting .195 with a .270 on-base percentage, seven home runs, 21 RBIs, and three stolen bases. He left a June 10 game in Toronto with what the Phillies described as a right shoulder muscle strain after making consecutive throws to home plate on sacrifice fly attempts.
In related roster moves, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Seth Johnson and selected the contract of right-hander Bryse Wilson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Left-handed pitcher Tanner Banks was sent to Lehigh Valley. Johnson posted a 0-1 record with six saves and a 1.33 ERA in 24 relief appearances with Lehigh Valley, though he had a 7.36 ERA across three previous games with Philadelphia this season. Wilson went 3-5 with a 6.29 ERA in 12 Lehigh Valley appearances, including 11 starts, and has a career 20-23 record with a 4.82 ERA in 163 MLB games following his most recent stint with the Chicago White Sox. Banks, who posted a 0-4 record with a 5.86 ERA in 26 games with Philadelphia, was reassigned to the minor league affiliate.

Why This Matters
García's season-ending injury significantly impacts the Phillies' outfield depth and playoff contention for 2026. As a two-time All-Star and $10 million investment, his loss forces the organization to rely on alternative roster solutions and affects team chemistry heading into the critical stretch run. The corresponding call-ups and demotions signal management's urgency in adapting to this unexpected setback.
