Peter Obi Declares Readiness to Die for Nigeria Amid Security Crisis

Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Party and former Anambra State governor, declared his readiness to sacrifice his life for Nigeria during an interview with journalist Rufai Oseni on the Black Box show. Speaking amid the country's escalating security challenges, including widespread kidnappings of schoolchildren, beheadings of teachers, and killings of senior military officers, Obi emphasized that genuine leadership demands ultimate commitment and willingness to confront insecurity directly.

When asked specifically what he would do as Commander-in-Chief to address these crises, Obi stressed the importance of decisive leadership and single-point authority rather than outlining specific operational strategies. He pointed to his track record as Anambra governor, where he said he successfully combated criminality by forcing notorious kidnappers out of the state through commitment and decisive action. He referenced an interview with a prominent kidnapper named Vance, who allegedly acknowledged that criminal operations became impossible under his administration. "One government. It's either I'm in charge or they're in charge. One person must be in charge," Obi stated, adding: "We declare war. If you're ready to lead, you must be ready to die. If you're not ready to die, go home."

When directly asked if he was prepared to die for Nigeria, Obi responded affirmatively, emphasizing his unwavering Nigerian identity. "Tomorrow. If I'm outside this country and there's war, I'll come back. I'm a Nigerian. I've never had any reason to have any country's passport… God created me a Nigerian. And I'm ready to die here," he declared. He expressed confidence that committed leadership could restore Nigeria's military capacity and global standing, recalling when Nigerian troops maintained peace in countries including Liberia, Sudan, and Kuwait.

Obi's remarks come during a critical period of insecurity across Nigeria. In May 2026, 40 students and teachers were abducted in Oyo State, with one teacher killed during the attack and another beheaded in captivity. The same month, retired Major General Rabe Abubakar was kidnapped alongside his wife in Katsina State; he was later confirmed dead while his wife was rescued. Obi lamented the rise of non-state actors challenging state authority and argued that the fundamental issue is willingness to confront insecurity directly, rather than the specifics of operational plans.
