Titans QB Cam Ward Focuses on Improvement as Tennessee Aims for Turnaround

Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward is embracing a relentless work ethic as the franchise attempts to reverse years of futility. With no break planned before training camp, Ward and the Titans completed their mandatory minicamp Tuesday, marking the conclusion of his first offseason program under new head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. The quarterback made clear that ending the offseason program does not signal a vacation, reflecting his philosophy that rest comes only when the season ends.

The Titans are in a rebuilding phase after posting their second consecutive 3-14 record, their fourth straight losing season. To bolster Ward's arsenal, Tennessee used the fourth overall pick in April to select wide receiver Carnell Tate from Ohio State. The franchise also signed veteran Wan'Dale Robinson and restructured Calvin Ridley's contract following his injury-shortened 2025 season. The Titans have been seeking a dominant number-one receiver since trading A.J. Brown in April 2022. The 6-foot-2, 192-pound Tate, who finished his college career with 121 catches for 1,872 yards and 14 touchdowns, has impressed during the offseason with athletic plays, including a one-handed sideline catch. Ward and Tate have been working extensively together, with the rookie studying at Ward's house and spending significant time in the playbook.

Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has praised Tate's grasp of the offense, calling him "one of the tops at the skill position" in terms of picking up the playbook. Daboll also expressed confidence in Ward's development, stating that the quarterback "can make all the throws" and will "be a good quarterback." During the offseason, Ward completed 3,169 passing yards with 15 touchdown passes and seven interceptions last season, picking just one interception over the final nine games. The Titans have focused on offensive situations featuring multiple receiving options on intermediate, slot, and vertical routes, though some incompletions by Ward during practice have raised questions about his accuracy.

Head coach Robert Saleh noted that Ward handles criticism well, quickly moving past mistakes with no ego and remaining receptive to coaching. Ward describes himself as a perfectionist, acknowledging the difficulty of pursuing perfection while committed to being the best player possible. "Even though it's one of the hardest things to do in this world is be perfect, I want to be a perfect football player," Ward said. "I think if I continue to strive to try and get that, then I'd be able to help this team win a lot of games." With the goal of securing a playoff berth and competing for a division title, Ward and the Titans are committed to climbing out of the bottom tier of the NFL standings.
