George Clooney, his wife Amal Clooney, and their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, evacuated their hilltop estate, Domaine du Canadel, in Brignoles, France, on Wednesday as wildfires spread through the region. The actor conveyed uncertainty about the fate of their property in a letter to Didier Bremond, the mayor of Brignoles, located approximately 90 kilometers east of Marseille in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
In his letter, Clooney expressed his commitment to the local community, writing: "At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment and as we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise two things. First we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we'll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there."
The wildfire near Brignoles broke out Wednesday afternoon and burned approximately 100 to 130 hectares (247 to 321 acres), according to local officials. About 600 to 700 residents were evacuated from the area; many were permitted to return Thursday after the fire was brought under control. Four firefighters were injured in fighting the blaze. The fire was smaller than major wildfires simultaneously affecting the Bordeaux region in southwestern France, and part of broader European wildfires affecting France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece that forced over 200,000 evacuations.
The Clooneys purchased their 172-hectare estate in Brignoles in 2021 for approximately $8.3 million (€10 million). The property features a vineyard, swimming pool, tennis court, olive groves with approximately 1,200 trees, and farmland. In December 2025, the French government awarded French citizenship to George Clooney, Amal Clooney, and their twins. The actor has described the property as his primary residence, citing his desire to provide his children with a normal life away from paparazzi and urban environments, contrasting it with his childhood on a Kentucky farm.
Why This Matters
The evacuation affected approximately 600–700 residents in Brignoles and highlighted ongoing wildfire risks across southern Europe, where France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece are experiencing simultaneous fires that have forced over 200,000 evacuations. The Clooney estate, valued at €10 million and purchased in 2021, includes agricultural and residential facilities; damage assessment remains pending. Broader European wildfire season impacts infrastructure, tourism, and seasonal displacement patterns across multiple countries.
