Giannis Antetokounmpo Traded to Miami Heat in Blockbuster NBA Deal

The Miami Heat acquired two-time NBA MVP and 10-time All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday in a major trade that reshapes the Eastern Conference. The transaction, announced on June 23, 2026, sends Antetokounmpo and power forward Bobby Portis to Miami in exchange for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, and Kasparas Jakucionis, along with the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, first-round selections in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a second-round pick in 2033.

Antetokounmpo, who led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA championship and was selected for the NBA's 75th anniversary list of greatest players, brings elite scoring and rebounding to Miami. The 31-year-old is coming off an injury-shortened season in which he averaged 27.6 points per game and has accumulated 21,531 career points. He was a perennial MVP candidate for nine consecutive seasons before 2025-26, when games missed left him ineligible for voting.

The trade marks a significant shift in strategy for Milwaukee, which fired coach Doc Rivers after the season and does not have a roster considered championship-contending. By trading Antetokounmpo, the Bucks can rebuild with four players viewed highly by Miami and substantial draft capital. Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam indicated in May that the team saw the pre-draft period as a natural time for such a move, with new coach Taylor Jenkins informed that Antetokounmpo's future with the franchise was uncertain.

Miami's acquisition continues the Heat's historic pattern of star acquisitions. The team previously landed Shaquille O'Neal in 2004—leading to the 2006 championship—and orchestrated the 2010 "Big Three" with LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade, which yielded championships in 2012 and 2013. The Heat maintained Bam Adebayo as a non-negotiable asset in the deal, with Antetokounmpo sharing the same agent as the All-Star center. The trade is expected to be finalized by July 6, with the possibility of additional players being included through other teams before that date.
