The US Department of Defense revealed in a federal court filing that it has deployed Elon Musk's Grok artificial intelligence system in military operations. According to a written declaration by Cameron Stanley, the DoD's digital and artificial intelligence chief, Grok was used to support targeting and strike operations during a joint US-Israel campaign against Iran, with forces deploying over 2,000 munitions within a 96-hour period during what was identified as Operation Epic Fury.
The disclosure emerged in a court submission to the United States District Court, Northern District of Mississippi, where xAI—the company that developed Grok—is defending against a lawsuit filed by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The NAACP alleges that xAI is illegally operating natural gas turbines. The DoD's declaration was submitted to support the Trump administration's intervention in the civil case on behalf of Musk's company.
Stanley's declaration specified that the government operates a customized version called the Grok Gov Model, which is based on derivatives of xAI's commercial Grok offerings. This specialized model is integrated into Maven Smart Systems (MSS), a military platform designed to support what the DoD characterized as vital national security missions encompassing targeting, intelligence, readiness, and recruitment. According to Stanley, MSS workflows enabled the rapid deployment of munitions during the operation.
Why This Matters
This disclosure marks a significant shift in how advanced military operations deploy AI, raising critical questions about autonomous weapons oversight, the role of commercial AI in defense operations, and potential geopolitical implications. The public revelation of Grok's integration into Maven Smart Systems signals both the acceleration of AI adoption in combat operations and emerging transparency about such capabilities—though the extent of AI autonomy in targeting decisions remains contested. For defense policymakers, investors, and international observers, this sets a precedent for how AI vendors and governments may collaborate on sensitive defense projects.
