Russian forces attacked Kyiv and surrounding areas early on August 8, killing at least four people, including a 3-year-old child, according to Ukrainian officials. Two grandparents and their grandson died when Russian drones destroyed their home in the Brovary district, northeast of Kyiv. At least one additional person was killed in Kyiv city proper in a strike involving six ballistic missiles. Three family members and a neighbor were hospitalized; four others were wounded in Kyiv city.
The overnight assault involved 151 drones and six ballistic missiles, along with other guided projectiles. Ukraine's air force reported intercepting 135 of 151 drones but stated that none of the ballistic missiles were shot down. The attack damaged residential buildings, vehicles, and outbuildings, with fires breaking out in multiple locations across Kyiv city's Holosiivskyi and Obolonskyi districts and in Brovary.
Ukraine's air defenses face a critical shortage of Patriot interceptor ammunition, the only weapon system in the country's arsenal capable of engaging ballistic missiles. Ukraine's Defense Ministry reported on August 7 that in July, Russia fired 195 ballistic missiles at Ukraine, of which Ukraine successfully intercepted only 29. In the same month, Ukraine's air defenses shot down approximately 5,300 drones and missiles overall—just under 60 percent of roughly 9,000 Russian attack drones and missiles launched.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly appealed to Western partners, particularly the United States, for additional Patriot interceptor ammunition. He has also called for permission to use Elon Musk's Starlink satellite system to guide strikes on Russian missile launchers, or alternatively, for permission to manufacture Patriot ammunition domestically. Following the latest attacks, Zelenskyy posted on X calling for additional sanctions to "prevent the production of these ballistic missiles," along with "anti-ballistic capabilities" and "interceptor missiles."
The attack occurred hours after Zelenskyy arrived in Belgrade for his first official visit to Serbia. Zelenskyy planned to discuss expanding economic ties, relations with the European Union, and security issues with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister Djuro Macut. Serbia, which maintains friendly relations with Russia despite the invasion, has provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine and pledged to assist in reconstruction efforts.
Separately, Ukraine struck the Ilsky Oil Refinery in Russia's Krasnodar region, causing a fire that wounded five people, according to local Russian officials. Ukrainian long-range drone and missile strikes on Russian oil facilities have continued nearly daily, contributing to fuel shortages affecting Russia.
Why This Matters
Russia's continued strikes on Ukraine's capital region demonstrate sustained military pressure on civilian areas. Ukraine's documented inability to intercept ballistic missiles—intercepting only 29 of 195 in July—reflects a measurable capability gap in air defense. The shortage of Patriot interceptor ammunition directly affects civilian casualty rates and has prompted formal requests to the US and other Western partners for specific weapons systems, signaling both the operational constraints on Ukrainian forces and potential shifts in Western military aid prioritization.
