Kumagai's aggressive baserunning gives Hanshin early lead as Yakult's defensive mishap proves costly

In a Central League matchup at Koshien Stadium on June 23, the Hanshin Tigers secured a 1-0 lead in the second inning through a combination of aggressive baserunning by infielder Keisuke Kumagai and a costly defensive error by the Yakult Swallows. With the score tied at 0-0 and one out in the bottom of the second, Kumagai reached base on a left-field single. After teammate Taiki Hamada—making his debut with the Tigers—followed with another left-field hit to move Kumagai to second base, catcher Ryutaro Umeno flew out to right field. Kumagai tagged up and advanced to third, then seized the opportunity when Yakult's relay throw went awry, sprinting home to give Hanshin the opening run.

Yakult's pitcher Taichi Yamano gave up consecutive hits to start the inning, setting up the scoring opportunity. With runners on first and second, right fielder Montel made an impressive diving catch on Umeno's line drive but immediately compounded the play with a poor relay throw to second base. The errant throw allowed Kumagai to score while Montel was still recovering from his catch.
