The cyber-thriller “The Undeclared War” returns for a second six-episode season on Channel 4, following the aftermath of a massive Russian cyber-attack and the discovery of a mole within GCHQ. Set in 2024, immediately after the events of season one, the team in the Malware Department at GCHQ realizes that Russia was not the real architect of the attack, and they face a new adversary. Saara Parvin (Hannah Khalique-Brown), a brilliant young coder on placement at GCHQ, observes irregularities in information flows that indicate a mole is operating inside the intelligence agency.
Simon Pegg reprises his role as Danny Patrick, GCHQ’s Head of Operations, who must navigate professional pressures and personal turmoil involving his wife, Barbara Patrick (Siân Brooke), a former MI5 analyst now working at GCHQ. The season introduces a newly created role within GCHQ, Director of Rapid Response, filled by Lt Colonel Roz Cavendish (Chloe Pirrie), seconded by Foreign Secretary Richard Marston (Ed Stoppard). Danny interprets this move as a threat to his authority, adding internal tension to the agency’s operations.
Key returning cast includes Alex Jennings as David Neal, Head of GCHQ, and Danny Sapani as Charlie Francis, Head of Security and Danny’s childhood friend. Adrian Lester appears as the prime minister. The series is written by Colin Teevan, directed by Paul McGuigan, and produced by Playground, Stonehenge Films, and Universal Global Television. According to The Guardian, the season features “plenty of scowling and running down empty corridors.” Channel 4’s press pack confirms that episodes explore flashbacks to Barbara’s MI6 mission in Hong Kong in 2014, a reappearance of her ex-boyfriend Nicky Chan in 2022, and escalating conflicts that lead to tragedy at GCHQ.
