Seibu defeated Hanshin 1-0 on June 16 at Koshien Stadium to clinch its first-ever interleague baseball championship. The victory also gave the Lions a morale boost as they push toward the second half of the season, after entering the final game with a chance to secure the title on their own.
Outfielder Shinya Hasegawa, 24, who has emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers with a .367 batting average, said the team’s goal of winning every series in interleague play had been achieved. He described the win as especially satisfying given the noise from the home crowd and credited Seibu’s pitchers for holding firm in a tight game.
In a handwritten account published after the game, Hasegawa also reflected on a costly baserunning mistake in a May 28 game against Yakult at Jingu Stadium. He said the error reminded him of two lessons: the importance of preparation and the need not to assume how a play will unfold.
Hasegawa said he wants to apply those lessons in the rest of the season, calling the mistake a turning point in his professional career. Seibu’s interleague crown came with a league-best .824 winning percentage in the competition and ended a long wait for the Pacific League club, which had previously been the only one in the league without an interleague title.
