Americans voted on November 3, 2026, in midterm elections that will determine control of Congress and shape the remainder of Donald Trump's second presidential term. All 435 House of Representatives seats were contested, along with 35 of 100 Senate seats and governorships in 36 states.
Control of Congress carries significant stakes. Republicans currently hold a slim majority in the House (218 seats) and lead the Senate 53–47, giving them a trifecta alongside the presidency. Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats to take control, given that Vice President JD Vance can break a 50–50 tie. CNN's aggregation of generic ballot polls showed Democrats leading by nine points heading into election day, suggesting the House could shift to Democratic control. Key Senate races in Alaska, Georgia, Kansas, and Iowa were identified as potentially decisive.
Voters cited the economy—including inflation, housing costs, and healthcare prices—as a major concern. Immigration remained contested, with Republicans arguing Trump had fulfilled campaign promises through border restrictions and enforcement actions. Artificial intelligence regulation emerged as a point of disagreement, with both parties expressing support for oversight, contrary to Trump's stated opposition to AI legislation. The conflict between the US and Israel against Iran, which began in February 2026, was cited as a factor in continued inflation.
Polling indicated declining approval for the president: Trump's approval rating fell from approximately 50% at the start of his second term to about 37% by early October, with 61% disapproving. Historically, voters tend to vote against the sitting president's party in midterms. However, many seats were considered safe for either party, with the Cook Political Report identifying only 18 House districts and seven Senate races as true toss-ups.
More than 50 million people participated in early voting across the country, approximately 8 million more than at the equivalent stage in 2022. The elections prompted extensive media coverage globally. Italy's Rai network broadcast continuous coverage across multiple channels, including a special edition of "Porta a Porta" with analysis and live results. Indian media outlets also provided significant coverage of the elections.
Why This Matters
Control of Congress shapes legislative ability to pass budgets, regulate markets, and approve judicial appointments for the remainder of Trump's term. Republicans hold a 218-seat House majority and 53-47 Senate lead; Democrats need four net Senate gains to control the chamber (with VP tiebreaker at 50-50). Early polling showed Democrats leading generic ballot by nine points, raising possibility of House control shift. Identified swing races in Alaska, Georgia, Kansas, and Iowa will determine final Senate composition. Economic concerns (inflation, housing, healthcare costs) and immigration policy enforcement were cited as voter priorities; outcomes will signal voter appetite for current administration's policy direction.
