The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has issued a yellow alert for six districts in northern Karnataka—Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal, and Raichur—forecasting heavy rainfall on June 20 and 21. The alert comes as the monsoon remains sluggish across much of the state, with light to moderate rain expected over the next week. An immediate alert was also issued on June 17 for Kalburgi, Raichur, Kodagu, and Mysuru-Chamrajnagar, warning of rain within the next three hours.
Coastal and southern interior districts are experiencing temperatures 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal, while northern interior areas have recorded maximum temperatures up to 5.1 degrees Celsius higher than usual. The weather department attributes the temperature rise to a lull in monsoon activity. Bengaluru is expected to see partly cloudy skies with light to moderate rain over the next 24 to 48 hours, with maximum and minimum temperatures around 32°C and 21°C, respectively.
On June 20 and 21, northern interior districts may also experience gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms. The southwest monsoon is currently advancing steadily and is expected to spread into most parts of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh over the next 4-5 days, influenced by multiple cyclonic circulations and troughs that will continue to drive rainfall activity in Karnataka.
Residents in the affected districts have been advised to take precautions against heavy rain and strong winds. The weather outlook for June 22-23 indicates light to moderate rain in several places across coastal and south interior Karnataka.
Why This Matters
Heavy rain and gusty winds could disrupt travel, agriculture, and daily life in the affected districts. Residents should monitor alerts and avoid low-lying areas. The monsoon's slow progress also affects regional water availability and crop planning across Karnataka.
