Gwiazdowie donated 385,000 zloty to Poland's Law and Justice party over three years

Andrzej and Joanna Gwiazda, prominent figures from Poland's anti-communist opposition era, have provided substantial financial support to the Law and Justice party (PiS), donating a combined total of 385,380 zloty between 2024 and May 2026. The couple made contributions of 106,500 zloty in 2024, 138,900 zloty in 2025, and 139,980 zloty in May 2026. Their donations came during a period when party leader Jarosław Kaczyński repeatedly appealed to supporters for financial assistance.

The PiS faced significant financial difficulties stemming from the settlement of its 2023 election campaign finances. Disputed rulings from the State Electoral Commission (PKW) and the Supreme Court's Chamber of Extraordinary Control and Public Affairs resulted in reduced state subsidies due to irregularities in campaign funding. According to Kaczyński's statements in mid-May 2026, the party faced a shortfall of approximately 46 million zloty by year's end, needed for operational costs, staff salaries, programmatic conventions, agricultural conferences, and planned youth campus activities in September.

Andrzej Gwiazda is among Poland's most prominent anti-communist opposition activists from the People's Republic era. He was a co-founder of the Free Trade Unions of the Coast (WZZ Wybrzeża) and a key leader of the August 1980 Gdańsk Shipyard strike, as well as among the founding members of Solidarity. In 2023, Poland's Supreme Court awarded Gwiazda 1.3 million zloty in compensation and damages for unlawful arrest and internment during the 1980s. The couple's regular transfers to PiS represent among the party's most substantial individual donations during this period.
