EU Parliament Urges Albania to Halt Kushner-Linked Resort Amid Massive Protests

The European Parliament has called on Albania to suspend construction in protected areas for a proposed luxury resort connected to Jared Kushner, escalating pressure on Prime Minister Edi Rama over the controversial project. The initiative comes as Albania experiences its largest protests in decades, dubbed "The Flamingo Revolution," which have continued for 18 consecutive days and drawn international attention through coordinated demonstrations by the diaspora across multiple Western nations.

Protesters have mobilized in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Australia, reflecting widespread concern about the environmental and political implications of the development. Demonstrators are demanding not only the suspension of the resort project but also the repeal of laws governing investments and protected areas, while simultaneously calling for Prime Minister Rama to step down from office.

Dutch Member of the European Parliament Tineke Strik, serving as shadow lawmaker from the Greens–European Free Alliance group on the Commission's 2025 report on Albania, expressed strong support for the protesters. "The flamingo protest shows that citizens care about protecting the environment and joining the EU," Strik said. "We will stand with them, supporting their protest against Trump allies who exploit their natural heritage and supporting their journey towards the EU." This statement underscores the European Parliament's alignment with demonstrators and frames the issue as part of Albania's broader European integration efforts.
