Total Solar Eclipse and Perseid Meteor Shower Peak on August 12, 2026
A total solar eclipse will cross Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and northern Portugal on August 12, 2026, with substantial partial visibility across Europe, the UK, and Ireland—the deepest partial eclipse visible from the UK and Ireland since 1999. The event coincides with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, creating a rare dual astronomical spectacle.
Quick Facts

On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will sweep across Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and a small corner of northern Portugal, with the path of totality delivering up to 1 minute and 21 seconds of complete darkness. Spain will experience totality, with the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre in Teruel offering excellent viewing conditions and hosting live coverage by the European Space Agency and NASA. The eclipse will be observable from 19:30 CEST, with totality occurring at 20:31 CEST.
Across the wider European region, a substantial partial eclipse will be visible. In France, between 89.9% (Strasbourg) and 99.5% (south-west regions) of the sun will be obscured. The UK and Ireland will experience deep partial eclipses, with Ireland seeing more than 90% coverage—the largest solar eclipse visible from the island until September 2090. Specific measurements include 93.05% in Belfast, 96.43% in Cork, 91.4% in London, and 95.8% in Cornwall. The eclipse will begin around 18:10 BST in the UK and Ireland, peaking in early evening before concluding around 20:00–20:30 depending on location.
This eclipse is particularly historic: it marks the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland western Europe since 1999, and the first over mainland Spain since 1905. The event will begin with the sun low on the western horizon, making high vantage points and locations with clear western views ideal for observation.
The eclipse coincides with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, creating a rare dual astronomical spectacle within hours of each other. The new moon phase on August 12 will provide favorable viewing conditions for the Perseids later that night, with expectations of around 100 meteors per hour under ideal dark-sky conditions. This convergence is described by astronomers as an exceptional astronomical event for August 2026.
Viewing the eclipse safely requires ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses or indirect viewing methods such as pinhole projectors. Direct viewing without protection can cause permanent eye damage. Multiple organizations, including ESA, NASA, the BBC, and The Virtual Telescope Project, will provide live broadcasts accessible worldwide. Tourism to Spain is expected to increase as eclipse enthusiasts travel to the path of totality.
Why This Matters
On August 12, 2026, sky-watchers across Europe will experience a rare dual astronomical event within hours. Travelers and observatories in Spain will access 1 minute 21 seconds of complete darkness during totality—the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland western Europe since 1999 and mainland Spain since 1905. Viewers in the UK, Ireland, and France will observe partial eclipses exceeding 90% coverage. The simultaneous peak of the Perseid meteor shower (peaking ~100 meteors/hour) extends observing opportunities that evening. ESA, NASA, BBC, and other broadcasters will stream live coverage; eclipse tourism to Spain is expected to increase significantly. Safe viewing requires ISO 12312-2 certified glasses; unprotected direct viewing causes permanent eye damage.
