His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has revealed further details of a Dh750 million road infrastructure programme designed to significantly improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion between Sharjah and Dubai.
The announcement was made during the 'Direct Line' radio programme. The comprehensive plan includes the construction of new traffic corridors, a tunnel beneath the Al Taawun Roundabout, and enhanced connections to major highways such as Emirates Road and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road. The project also aims to provide direct access to the Expo Centre Sharjah through directional signage.
The Al Taawun area, a primary entry point into Dubai, currently experiences severe bottlenecks. Daily traffic from Al Ittihad Road, Al Nahda, Al Khan, and the Corniche converges at a single junction, while residential hubs generate massive domestic vehicle volumes. Peak-period congestion occurs daily from 7am to 9am and 5pm to 8pm.
To facilitate construction of the new underground tunnel, the landmark monument at Al Taawun Roundabout was temporarily removed. While initial plans for a dual-carriageway tunnel extending to Dubai faced obstacles due to the monument's deep foundations, Sheikh Sultan confirmed the monument will be reinstated in its original location once the tunnel is completed. Specialists have redesigned the road layout accordingly.
By replacing the traditional surface roundabout with a grade-separated system, vehicles will be able to move continuously without stopping, ensuring smoother traffic flow and shorter travel times between Al Taawun Street, Al Nahda Bridge, and Al Corniche Street. Works causing lane restrictions on Al Taawun Street will only last for a short period.
Additionally, Al Noor Road, a major alternative route currently under development, extends directly from Al Orooba Street into Dubai via the Al Nahda Bridge. Sheikh Sultan announced that Al Noor Road is scheduled to be officially inaugurated by the end of this year.

Why This Matters
For daily commuters between Sharjah and Dubai, this project directly targets the notorious Al Taawun bottleneck, promising to cut travel time by eliminating the need to stop at the roundabout. Businesses reliant on freight or employee commuting can expect reduced logistics delays and more predictable schedules. Real estate values in affected corridors may rise as accessibility improves.
