Qualcomm licenses Huawei's LogicFolding chip and 5G patents
Qualcomm and Huawei announced a multi-year patent license agreement on October 5, 2026, including cross-licenses across 5G, AI, compute, and networking technologies, plus Qualcomm's purchase of certain Huawei U.S. patents. The deal covers Huawei's LogicFolding chipmaking technique and marks the first 5G patent licensing agreement between the companies, subject to regulatory approval.
Quick Facts
- Multi-year, broad patent license agreement announced
- Cross-licenses to patent portfolios across 5G, compute, AI, and networking
- Qualcomm purchase of certain Huawei U.S. patents
- LogicFolding chipmaking technology patents licensed
- First 5G patent licensing deal between the two companies

Qualcomm Inc. and Huawei Technologies Co. announced a multi-year, broad patent license agreement on October 5, 2026, marking the first 5G patent licensing deal between the two companies. The agreement includes cross-licenses to both companies' patent portfolios across 5G, compute, artificial intelligence (AI), networking, and near- and co-packaged optics technologies. Qualcomm will also purchase certain Huawei patents in the United States covering compute, AI, networking, and other technology areas. The transaction is subject to necessary regulatory approvals.
The agreement specifically covers patents related to Huawei's LogicFolding chipmaking technique, a core technology Huawei views as a breakthrough for improving semiconductor performance. LogicFolding represents Huawei's effort to narrow the gap with leading chipmakers like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), particularly by addressing limitations imposed by restricted access to advanced equipment such as extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines used in producing cutting-edge chips. The technology emphasizes faster data transmission speeds to compensate for manufacturing constraints.
Both companies emphasized intellectual property values in their statements. Alan Fan, Huawei's Chief Intellectual Property Officer, highlighted Huawei's decades of R&D investment and contributions to 4G and 5G standards, including polar code signal transmission technology. John Han, Qualcomm's Executive Vice President and General Manager of Technology Licensing, affirmed Qualcomm's recognition of Huawei's continued innovation while reaffirming Qualcomm's 5G technology leadership.
For Huawei, the agreement signals international recognition of its original innovations and represents a significant step in advancing its overseas AI market presence. Huawei stated that following this deal, its total patent licensing agreement portfolio value is expected to exceed $6.83 billion USD (11.3 billion Singapore dollars). This marks the first time Huawei has licensed and transferred patents to Qualcomm in compute, AI, and networking fields, demonstrating the breadth of its technological contributions beyond 4G and 5G standards.
The agreement reflects the companies' commitment to licensing practices consistent with fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) principles. Huawei and Qualcomm have maintained a business relationship since 2001. Huawei first earned IP licensing revenue in 2011 following a dispute resolution with Motorola, and has maintained positive IP licensing revenue since 2021. Financial terms for the current patent purchase were not disclosed.
Why This Matters
This is the first 5G patent licensing agreement between Qualcomm and Huawei, a major technology licensing milestone between the two companies that have maintained a business relationship since 2001. The deal covers cross-licenses across 5G, compute, AI, and networking technologies, plus Qualcomm's purchase of Huawei U.S. patents. Following this agreement, Huawei's total patent licensing agreement portfolio value is expected to exceed USD 6.83 billion, expanding Huawei's intellectual property recognition and licensing revenue in international markets. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval.
