Real Madrid Confirms Free Transfer of Ibrahima Konaté from Liverpool

Real Madrid has officially announced the signing of French defender Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer, with the 27-year-old set to join the club on July 1 after his contract with Liverpool expires. Konaté has agreed to a four-year deal that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2030. The move marks the third acquisition of the summer for new manager José Mourinho, following the arrivals of Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella.

Konaté, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for a reported fee of €40 million, made 183 appearances for the Reds across all competitions. During his five-year stint at Anfield, he helped the club win the Premier League (2024-25), the FA Cup, and two EFL Cups. He also started in the 2022 Champions League final, which Liverpool lost 1-0 to Real Madrid.

The transfer was finalized after months of speculation and failed negotiations between Konaté and Liverpool over a new contract. The defender had acknowledged in April that there was a "big chance" he would stay, but talks broke down due to a gap over his valuation and wages. Liverpool confirmed in May that he would depart as a free agent.

Konaté is currently with the French national team at the 2026 World Cup in North America, where he was an unused substitute in their opening group stage win over Senegal. His official presentation at the Bernabéu will be delayed until France's participation in the tournament concludes. He will join a Real Madrid squad that already includes fellow French internationals Kylian Mbappé, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Ferland Mendy.

The signing continues Real Madrid's recent strategy of acquiring experienced, high-profile players on free transfers, allowing the club to invest resources elsewhere. Konaté's arrival addresses defensive depth concerns at Madrid, where he will compete for a starting spot with the likes of Antonio Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen, and Éder Militão. Additionally, reports indicate that Real Madrid has an agreement to sign Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries for a reported €20 million.
