Sabalenka ousted at China Open as top two seeds fall in early rounds
World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka lost to Nikola Bartunkova 6-4, 6-3 in the China Open third round on October 4, one day after world No. 1 Elena Rybakina was ousted. This marks the first time since 2015 that both top seeds have failed to reach the round of 16 at the tournament.
Quick Facts
- Sabalenka defeated by Bartunkova in third round
- Rybakina defeated by Charaeva in earlier round
- Both top seeds exited in early rounds
- Bartunkova advanced to face Kraus
- Andreeva defeated Kudermetova in fourth round

World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka was defeated by Czech player Nikola Bartunkova 6-4, 6-3 in the third round of the China Open on October 4, marking the second consecutive day a top seed exited the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. Bartunkova, ranked No. 34, dominated the match despite converting fewer than 50% of her first serves. Sabalenka failed to convert five break points in the opening set and threw her racquet after falling a break down early in the second set.
The loss follows the departure of world No. 1 Elena Rybakina, who was knocked out the previous day by Armenian player Alina Charaeva, ranked No. 118. This marks the first time since 2015 that the top two seeds have failed to reach the round of 16 at the China Open. Rybakina defeated Sabalenka in the US Open final last month and has recently claimed the top ranking. Sabalenka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has struggled at the Beijing event throughout her career, having never progressed beyond the quarterfinals.
Bartunkova advanced to face Austria's Sinja Kraus in the next round. The 20-year-old Czech player said after her victory: "I focused on myself, to be calm. She's a legend, so I'm really happy that I won the match." Kraus earlier defeated Dayana Yastremska 6-1, 6-4. Fifth-ranked Mirra Andreeva, the 2026 French Open champion, advanced into the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Polina Kudermetova in 68 minutes, converting five of seven break-point opportunities.
Sabalenka, 28, has not won a title since March when she captured the Indian Wells and Miami Open back-to-back—the "Sunshine Double." She has qualified for the WTA Finals and will finish 2026 without a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2022. The early exit reduces the field of top contenders, opening the path for other Grand Slam champions still in the draw, including Naomi Osaka, Jelena Ostapenko, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff.

Why This Matters
The early elimination of the world's top two-ranked players—Rybakina and Sabalenka—from a WTA 1000 event reshapes the tournament's competitive landscape. Both were favored contenders; their absence reduces clear front-runners and statistically opens qualification pathways for lower-ranked players. This impacts WTA Finals points distribution, sponsorship attention on the Beijing tournament, and betting/prediction models for the remainder of 2026. The last time both seeds failed to reach the round of 16 at China Open was 2015, making this outcome a measurable historical anomaly.
