Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff shot at in Mumbai; Bishnoi gang claims responsibility

Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff survived a shooting attack in Mumbai's Juhu area on Sunday evening. At least two gunmen fired multiple shots at close range at his BMW car as it moved slowly past a crowd near the residence of filmmaker Rohit Shetty, after Shroff left a football practice session. The 36-year-old actor sustained no gunshot injuries, but his driver and an autorickshaw driver were injured; his driver was hospitalised at Nanavati Hospital.

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility through a social media post and audio clip, with claims attributed to gang member Anil Pandit and accomplice Harman Sandhu. Police have detained three suspects in Rajasthan in connection with the incident—two from northern states (Haryana and Bihar) and one minor—who are expected to be handed to Mumbai Police. However, police have not yet independently verified the gang's involvement or the authenticity of the claims.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis instructed Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti to conduct a swift investigation and take strict action, and visited Shroff to assure him of government protection. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the attack was unacceptable and pledged to end such "hooliganism." The All Indian Cine Workers Association condemned the attack, alleging that gangsters are deliberately targeting film industry figures to create an "atmosphere of fear" and extort money, and criticised police and government for inadequate prevention efforts.

The incident echoes previous high-profile attacks attributed to the Bishnoi gang, including the 2024 murder of politician Baba Siddique in Mumbai, a 2024 shooting at Salman Khan's residence, the 2022 killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, and firing incidents at Delhi gym linked to singer Guru Randhawa and Kapil Sharma's Canadian café. American prosecutors have described the Bishnoi network as a transnational organised crime syndicate using public claims of violence to intimidate and fuel extortion operations.
