Nationwide GSM-R Failure Forces Germany to Halt All Train Services

All train services across Germany were suspended on Tuesday evening, June 23, 2026, following a nationwide failure of the GSM-R digital rail radio system, the critical communication network used for internal railway operations. German rail operator Deutsche Bahn confirmed the disruption in a statement, saying that “all trains are currently being held at stations” as a precautionary safety measure. The incident stranded dozens of passengers at stations across the country, including Berlin’s Westkreuz S-Bahn station, where a railway employee told those waiting that the outage “could take five or six hours.”

The GSM-R system, which provides voice and data services essential for communication between train drivers and control centers, failed without immediate explanation. Deutsche Bahn’s technicians were immediately deployed to resolve the problem, with the company stating that they are “working around the clock” and “at high pressure” to restore normal service. The exact timeline for repairs remained unclear, and Deutsche Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla told the Bild newspaper: “We are now trying to get the trains into stations so that travelers can disembark. And then we have to fix the problem, which we don’t yet know.”

The disruption affected not only long-distance rail services but also the entire Berlin S-Bahn network, leaving passengers to rely on alternative public transport such as Berlin’s BVG services. In Switzerland, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) reported minimal impact, with only one train delayed, and said it was in contact with Deutsche Bahn to assess the situation further.

The GSM-R system, introduced across Europe since 2000 as a common railway communications standard, is vital for safe and efficient rail operations. While past nationwide halts in Germany’s rail service have been rare, they have typically been caused by severe weather rather than technical problems. Deutsche Bahn promised to provide further information as soon as possible as investigations into the cause of the malfunction continued.
