Maritime traffic on the Sulina Canal was restricted on Wednesday afternoon after the seagoing tanker 'Lilstella', sailing under the Hong Kong flag, ran aground while en route to Galati. The asphalt-bitumen carrier, measuring 109.9 metres in length and 20 metres in beam, partially obstructed the navigable fairway, prompting the Romanian Naval Authority to impose temporary traffic restrictions.
According to a spokesperson for the Romanian Naval Authority, Cristina Puscasu, no material damage or signs of pollution have been reported so far. A team from the Tulcea Harbourmaster's Office was dispatched to the incident site at river mile 28+5 to assess the situation and determine what measures would be necessary to resolve the grounding. The Lower Danube River Administration in Galati was requested to deploy the tug Sulina 2 to assist in refloating the vessel.
Authorities opened an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. The temporary traffic restrictions are expected to remain in place until the vessel can be successfully refloated and the fairway cleared for normal maritime operations.
Why This Matters
The grounding of a major tanker in a critical waterway like the Sulina Canal directly impacts regional maritime commerce and supply chains. Even with no reported pollution, the incident highlights operational risks in narrow channels and demonstrates how a single vessel casualty can restrict traffic for multiple users. Readers relying on Danube River logistics or monitoring Eastern European port operations need to track resolution progress and potential delays to their shipments.
