At a tribute event held in Abuja on Wednesday, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike recounted how the late Chief Daniel Orbih, former National Vice-Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for South-South, played a decisive role in his emergence as Rivers State governor in 2015. Wike described Orbih as the political figure who remained steadfast despite intense pressure and financial inducements from opponents, including the then-sitting Rivers governor, to withdraw his support.
Wike detailed the turbulent period between 2013 and 2014 when political adversaries attempted to derail his ambition. "There was nothing in this world that was not done to induce him," Wike said, noting that the then-governor sent emissaries with substantial offers, which Orbih rejected. Beyond public backing, Orbih materially supported Wike's campaign by donating two bulletproof Mercedes-Benz buses for security and mobilizing political structures across the South-South region.
Wike emphasized Orbih's uncommon selflessness in Nigerian politics, stating that throughout his eight years as governor, Orbih never sought personal gain, patronage, or government contracts. "Dan is not a typical Nigerian politician," Wike said. He credited Orbih's loyalty and strategic foresight with protecting the South-South's political interests and contributing to the emergence of numerous national and state lawmakers. Wike called for Orbih to be honored with a state burial in recognition of his contributions to Edo State's political development.
Other speakers at the event offered their own tributes. Senator Magnus Abe, Chairman of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, credited Orbih with introducing him to politics and serving as director-general of his first gubernatorial campaign under the United Nigeria Congress Party. Senator Adams Oshiomhole, former Edo governor, stated that Orbih's role as a political counterweight made him a more accountable governor. Oshiomhole recalled that Wike helped reconcile him with Orbih after years of political disagreement, with their reconciliation beginning at Wike's residence in Port Harcourt.
Orbih, originally from Etsako in Edo State, died on August 31 at age 64.
Why This Matters
The tribute event marks formal recognition of political patronage networks in Nigeria's electoral history. Orbih's documented role—providing material resources (vehicles), political mobilization across South-South states, and resistance to inducements—illustrates the mechanics of inter-regional political alliance-building in Nigeria's 2015 governorship races. Wike's public acknowledgment may shape succession politics and party unity in Rivers State and broader PDP factional alignments.
