An IndiGo flight carrying over 180 passengers made an emergency landing in Hyderabad on October 11 after a power bank caught fire mid-air. Flight 6E 6115 was traveling from New Delhi to Chennai when smoke was detected from a passenger's personal electronic device stored in an overhead bin approximately 2.5 hours into the flight. Cabin crew responded promptly, and passengers were seen in social media videos attempting to extinguish the flames using cloth and bags before a crew member deployed a fire extinguisher to bring the situation under control.
The Airbus A321 descended from 35,000 feet and diverted to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, landing safely at 3:59 p.m. local time. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew. In a statement, IndiGo said the situation was "brought under control" and confirmed that established emergency protocols were followed. The airline arranged an alternate aircraft to transport passengers to their final destination in Chennai and offered refreshments and updates during the diversion.
The incident marks the third reported power bank fire on an IndiGo flight in recent months. In May 2026, a power bank fire on flight 6E 108 from Hyderabad to Chandigarh after landing resulted in five injuries and emergency evacuation. In October 2025, another power bank caught fire on flight 6E 2107 during taxi at New Delhi airport. Power banks are restricted to cabin baggage only due to lithium-ion battery fire risks, and their use to charge devices onboard has been prohibited since late 2025.
Why This Matters
Power bank fires on aircraft pose a direct flight safety risk and have triggered three documented incidents on IndiGo in recent months, with one prior incident resulting in injuries and emergency evacuation. The October 11 diversion of 180+ passengers to an alternate airport, combined with existing regulatory restrictions on power bank cabin use since late 2025, underscores ongoing compliance and equipment screening challenges for international airlines. Lithium-ion battery incidents affect aircraft maintenance protocols, insurance coverage, and regulatory pressure on airline baggage policies globally.
