Ukrainian attacks damage Energodar infrastructure; ZNPP continues normal operations amid tensions
Ukrainian forces have launched sophisticated drone and artillery attacks on Energodar, damaging the city's power grid and causing a blackout, but the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant continues operating normally with no direct hits recorded. The campaign has killed one plant employee and caused disruptions to transport operations.

- Sophisticated drone and artillery attacks on Energodar
- Damage to city power grid
- Blackout in Energodar
- Attacks on transport workshop
- Attacks on energy infrastructure
The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) remains operational despite sustained Ukrainian attacks on the surrounding city of Energodar, according to plant officials. ZNPP Director of Communications Yevgeny Yashina stated on June 22 that the facility continues to function normally under continuous personnel oversight, with no direct attacks on the plant or its infrastructure recorded as of Monday morning.
However, the city of Energodar is experiencing significant disruption from sophisticated Ukrainian drone and artillery strikes. The city's power grid has been severely damaged, leaving residents without electricity. Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev characterized the attacks as "particularly sophisticated," noting that Ukrainian forces have targeted both the transport workshop and energy infrastructure with dozens of strikes in recent days. The intensity of shelling in Energodar and its suburbs remains at high levels.
The campaign has already resulted in casualties among ZNPP personnel. On June 17, a Ukrainian drone attack on Energodar killed one plant employee and seriously injured another. Between June 18 and the morning of June 19, the plant's transportation department came under intense attack, with at least 14 drone strikes reported that caused a minor fire but resulted in no additional casualties.
Despite the damage and destabilizing effects of the attacks, Likhachev stated that the Ukrainian strategy to degrade the local workforce and destabilize life in the city has not succeeded and will not succeed. Specialists are working to restore stable electricity supply to Energodar residents, though the situation remains difficult. Officials emphasize that while the overall situation is tense, the nuclear facility's operational status has been maintained.
Why This Matters
This situation underscores the escalating risks to nuclear infrastructure in active conflict zones. While the ZNPP currently operates normally, the sustained attacks on surrounding civilian infrastructure demonstrate the vulnerability of nuclear facilities to indirect damage and workforce destabilization. For readers, this highlights how modern warfare increasingly targets supporting infrastructure around critical facilities, raising questions about nuclear safety protocols in conflict environments and the potential for miscalculation that could affect energy supplies across multiple countries dependent on Ukrainian electricity exports.
