Persebaya beats Persib on penalties to win Indonesia's Presidential Cup

Persebaya Surabaya won the 2026 Presidential Cup (Piala Presiden) after defeating Persib Bandung 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw during regulation and extra time. The final took place on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Stadion Kapten I Wayan Dipta in Gianyar, Bali, and was held without spectators or supporters in attendance.

The match began slowly, with few clear chances in the opening minutes. Persebaya broke through in the 20th minute when Ramadhan Sananta headed in a Rachmat Irianto cross to give the team a 1-0 lead. Persib responded four minutes later, with Patricio Matricardi equalizing from a corner kick to make it 1-1. Despite aggressive play from Persebaya—which recorded 13 shots with five on target—neither team could find a winning goal during the 120 minutes of regulation and extra time.

The match proceeded to a penalty shootout. Persib's Uilliam Barros missed the opening penalty, while Persebaya's Yuran Fernandes also failed to convert. The decisive moment came when Persebaya goalkeeper Reza Arya blocked a shot from Hamra Hehanusa, allowing Gledson Paixao to secure the championship with Persebaya's seventh penalty conversion. The victory marks Persebaya's first title in the tournament's history.

The decision to hold the final without spectators was made jointly by tournament organizers and police authorities. Arya Sinulingga, Deputy Chair of the Organizing Committee, stated that the recommendation came from security assessments and coordination with the National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri). Despite the closed-door status, 1,284 security personnel were deployed, comprising 1,042 police officers, 48 military personnel, 42 local government officials, and 152 traditional Balinese stewards (Pecalang).

Persebaya coach Bernardo Tavares praised his players' fighting spirit and said the trophy serves as a foundation before the team enters the 2026/2027 Super League season. Francisco Rivera was named the tournament's Best Player, while Arlyansyah Abdulmanan won Best Young Player. Gustavo Henrique Rodrigues topped the scoring chart with four goals.
