Militant Attack on Pakistan Rangers Compound in Karachi Leaves Multiple Dead

A militant group rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the provincial headquarters of the Pakistan Rangers in Karachi on Saturday evening, sparking an intense gunfight with security forces. The attack occurred around 8:10 p.m. local time near the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area on University Road, a location housing several universities and government facilities. According to police officials, three security personnel were killed in the initial blast and subsequent exchange of gunfire, while four militants were also killed during the confrontation. Security forces deployed at the gate responded swiftly, preventing the attackers from breaching deeper into the facility, according to Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho.

Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a lesser-known militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack, though initial reports indicated the claim remained unverified at the time of reporting. The incident prompted a major security response, with police, rescue teams, and bomb disposal units rushing to seal off the neighbourhood and conduct clearing operations. The Edhi Foundation dispatched ambulances and rescue volunteers following reports of the blast.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered an immediate investigation and directed authorities to arrest the perpetrators. While officials have not formally linked the attack to any specific group at the time of reporting, Pakistan has experienced a persistent wave of militant violence targeting security forces in recent years. Authorities have previously blamed the Pakistani Taliban (Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP) and allied militant groups for similar incidents. The attack underscores ongoing security challenges in Karachi, Pakistan's largest financial hub and most populous city.
