The STI opened 0.21% higher at 5,223.53 points in the morning, but quickly reversed direction, dipping to 5,188.53 points by 9:10 am. By the end of the trading session, the index had lost 20.14 points, reflecting a broader trend of profit-taking across the region.

Daily Farmers Retail Group and Thai Beverage were the top performers, rising 4.25% and 3.49% respectively, closing at US$3.68 and S$0.445. In contrast, ST Engineering and Venture Corporation were the biggest losers, dropping 2.87% and 2.61% to S$10.83 and S$17.17 respectively.

Why This Matters
The retreat signals that recent gains may be overextended, prompting investors to lock in profits. Heavy trading volume and broad declines across regional markets suggest a cautious near-term outlook, which could affect portfolio rebalancing decisions for those with Singapore exposure.
