Manchester United in crisis: Carrick facing sack after worst Premier League start ever
Manchester United faces a managerial crisis after suffering their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, with Michael Carrick's future in serious doubt following Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth. Multiple candidates, including Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann, are being considered as potential replacements, though Emery remains committed to Aston Villa.
Quick Facts
- Manchester United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth at Old Trafford
- Carrick extended his winless run to eight matches
- Bruno Fernandes was dropped to the bench following criticism of Carrick's tactics
- Lisandro Martínez gave critical interviews about club hierarchy
- Director of football and CEO held talks about managerial future

Manchester United's managerial situation reached a critical juncture on Monday after the club's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday extended their winless run to eight matches across all competitions. The result marks United's worst start to a Premier League season in the competition's history, leaving them 16th in the table with seven points from eight matches, just one point above the relegation zone.
Manager Michael Carrick's position became increasingly untenable following the loss, which came days after a 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como. The situation intensified when Carrick dropped captain Bruno Fernandes to the bench after Fernandes publicly questioned his tactics in Italy. Additional internal tensions emerged after defender Lisandro Martínez gave interviews critical of the club's hierarchy. On Monday, director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada held talks at the club's training ground to discuss next steps, though no immediate decision on Carrick's future was announced.
Several candidates are under consideration to replace Carrick if the club proceeds with a managerial change. Sky Sports reported that Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are the current frontrunners, both available without compensation requirements. Howe, who left Newcastle in July, has indicated openness to the United job, though Newcastle would be entitled to approximately £3 million in compensation should he join. Nagelsmann, the former Germany and Bayern Munich manager, is known to United's director of recruitment Christopher Vivell from their time together at RB Leipzig. Antonio Conte and Unai Emery have also been considered, though neither is among the immediate favourites. Sky Sports reported that Emery remains committed to his project at Aston Villa under a five-year contract through 2029.
Former United midfielder Paul Scholes and pundit Jamie Carragher have both publicly advocated for different candidates. Scholes argued in a podcast that Conte represents the best option despite acknowledging the risks of appointing him, citing his track record of success at top clubs. Carragher, meanwhile, called Emery "the best manager in the Premier League" and suggested he would want the opportunity to prove himself at a major European club after previous spells at Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain that "haven't gone particularly well." However, Carragher acknowledged Emery's commitment to Villa remains a significant obstacle.
Carrick, appointed permanent manager in May after an impressive interim spell that saw United finish third in the Premier League, signed a two-year contract extension at that time. His sudden downturn in form has intensified scrutiny of United's summer transfer strategy, with director Wilcox facing particular criticism from supporters. United players are scheduled to return to training on Tuesday, with the club set to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday in their next Premier League fixture.
Why This Matters
Manchester United's relegation risk is measurable: 7 points from 8 matches, one point above the drop zone, with the club unbeaten for eight matches across competitions. Operational effects are immediate: managerial stability affects team performance, player morale (evidenced by Fernandes' benching and Martínez's public criticism), and transfer/recruitment direction (director Wilcox's credibility under scrutiny). Next fixture against Chelsea on Saturday occurs amid organizational uncertainty. Candidate availability and compensation terms (Howe's £3M Newcastle entitlement, Nagelsmann's availability without fee) are concrete factors shaping replacement decisions.
