The remaining eight injured—including a second five-year-old girl and a two-year-old girl—sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Samarasinghe was arrested at the scene and charged with nine offences: three counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, three counts of negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and three counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct. The maximum penalty for the most serious charge is seven years' imprisonment. He appeared in Newcastle Bail Court on Sunday without applying for release and was formally refused bail. Police confirmed the crash was not terrorism-related and noted two other teenagers were in the vehicle but unharmed. The case will return to Newcastle Local Court on 15 October.
Thousands of Newcastle residents had gathered to farewell the team bus on what was intended as a celebration ahead of the club's first grand final in 25 years.
