Indonesia's Asset Recovery Agency (BPA) under the Attorney General's Office has handed over assets worth Rp82.68 billion (approximately US$5.3 million) seized from convicted fraudster Eddy Tansil, the former owner of PT Golden Key Group. The assets were officially transferred during the BPA Fair 2026 auction handover ceremony held on June 15, 2026, at the BPA office in Jakarta.
The recovered assets include cash worth Rp51.68 billion, 20 plots of land, a villa, and a factory building. The cash amount was precisely stated as Rp51,682,537,000 by the Head of BPA, Kuntadi, during the event. Officials present included Attorney General ST Burhanuddin, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, and LPSK Chairman Achmadi.
The assets were retrieved through intensive negotiations with banks that had previously held control over them. The total value of assets recovered from Tansil amounts to Rp82,680,537,548. The properties consist of a 1,550-square-meter plot with four villa buildings in Megamendung, Bogor; a 26,403-square-meter industrial site with a factory formerly used by PT Rimba Subur Sejahtera (ex-Becks Beer factory) in Gunung Putri, Bogor; and 18 vacant land parcels in Serang, Banten, acquired in 2025.
Eddy Tansil was convicted of embezzling US$430 million (approximately Rp1.3 trillion at the time) from state funds in the early 1990s. In 1996, the Jakarta Central District Court sentenced him to 20 years in prison plus fines and restitution. However, he escaped from custody in a meticulously planned breakout on May 6, 1996, allegedly bribing guards and using a medical appointment as cover. He fled to Singapore and then China, remaining a fugitive for 30 years without facing justice.
Tansil's case was emblematic of corruption during Indonesia's New Order era, involving connections with high-ranking officials. He secured a loan from state bank Bapindo through his ties with Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Sudomo and Finance Minister JB Sumarlin, and partnered with Tommy Soeharto, son of then-President Suharto, to build a petrochemical plant that existed only on paper. The funds were instead siphoned for personal gain.
Why This Matters
This recovery marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s fight against high-level corruption from the New Order era, proving that assets can still be reclaimed decades later. For readers, it shows the effectiveness of negotiation over litigation in international asset recovery, and underscores the importance of persistent legal and financial mechanisms to hold fugitives accountable, which could inspire similar approaches in other jurisdictions with long-standing corruption cases.
