Tottenham Signs Netherlands Defender Van Hecke from Brighton for £52 Million

Tottenham Hotspur has confirmed the signing of Netherlands international Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported fee of £52 million ($68 million). The 26-year-old center back, currently competing at the World Cup for the Netherlands, will reunite with Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, under whom he previously played at Brighton.

Van Hecke signed a long-term contract with the Premier League club, though the exact duration was not disclosed. The defender expressed enthusiasm about the move, stating: "I already have a really strong connection with the head coach, who I'm looking forward to working with again." Manager De Zerbi praised the signing, describing van Hecke as "a strong, intelligent centre back who is brave in possession and plays with personality," qualities he believes align with his tactical approach.

The 26-year-old made his World Cup debut on Sunday in the Netherlands' 2-2 draw with Japan. Tottenham's acquisition of van Hecke represents part of a broader defensive reinforcement effort following the club's near-relegation scare. The Spurs have also secured Argentina center back Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth and left-back Andy Robertson from Liverpool on free transfers, signalling a significant overhaul of their backline.
