Trump Says US Aims to Expand Abraham Accords Through Iran Deal

President Donald Trump stated that the United States expects to expand the Abraham Accords as a result of a peace deal with Iran, speaking at a press conference following the Group of Seven summit in Evian-les-Bains, France on June 17. Trump emphasized that Saudi Arabia should take a leading role in joining the expanded agreements, arguing that the kingdom would benefit significantly and noting that most other regional states have already participated. Trump suggested that fear of Iran may have initially limited participation to the original signatories.

The Abraham Accords, mediated by the United States, have enabled normalization of relations between Israel and multiple Arab nations since 2020. In 2020, Bahrain, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates established formal diplomatic relations with Israel. Sudan followed in 2021 with an announcement of diplomatic relations. These agreements marked a significant diplomatic shift in the Middle East, as Israel had previously established formal relations with only Egypt (1979) and Jordan (1994) among Arab nations.

Trump's call for expanded participation reflects his broader vision for regional stability. He previously called on all Middle Eastern states to join the Abraham Accords in August 2025, believing such widespread participation would ensure lasting peace. The president framed Saudi Arabia's potential accession as particularly important, suggesting it could serve as a catalyst for broader Arab participation and strengthen the normalization framework across the region.
