Avengers: Endgame Re-Release Earns $86M, Reclaims No. 1 Global

Marvel Studios' re-release of Avengers: Endgame, branded "Encore," opened to $86 million globally this weekend, with $26 million domestically and $60 million internationally, reclaiming the No. 1 position at the box office seven years after its original 2019 release. The film features new end-credits scenes and exclusive footage from the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, alongside an introductory message from actors Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans thanking fans.

The re-release's strong performance ranks it as the third-highest domestic debut for a re-release, behind only the 1997 Star Wars: A New Hope re-issue ($35.9 million) and the 2011 3D re-release of The Lion King ($30.2 million). Internationally, the $60 million debut marks the second-highest foreign opening for a re-release, behind 2012's Titanic 3D. The film opened across over 3,000 theaters, with over 1,300 in Infinity Vision premium large-format screens, which accounted for approximately 52% of the opening weekend gross. IMAX screenings contributed $13.7 million globally ($4 million domestic, $9.7 million international).

With this weekend's performance, Avengers: Endgame's lifetime worldwide gross has reached $2.885 billion, placing it second on the all-time box office list, $39 million behind Avatar. The re-release also contributed to Marvel Studios crossing $35 billion in global box office revenue across its 38 films, solidifying the franchise's position as the most successful in cinema history. The film performed particularly well internationally, setting opening weekend records for a re-release in multiple territories including the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Netherlands, and numerous other markets.

Competing releases included the sci-fi horror reboot Resident Evil in second place with $23.3 million domestically ($50.3 million globally), followed by Heart of the Beast with Brad Pitt in third place domestically ($20 million, $50.1 million globally). Robert Pattinson's Venice Film Festival-backed drama Primetime opened just behind Heart of the Beast with $19.2 million domestically, demonstrating strong appeal to Gen Z audiences, with 69% of ticket buyers under age 30. DreamWorks Animation's Forgotten Island underperformed in fifth place with $12.8 million domestically and $7.8 million internationally.

The crowded weekend highlighted Hollywood's increasing reliance on re-releases to fill gaps in the theatrical release schedule. Overall ticket sales surged 58.5% compared to the same weekend last year, with the domestic box office reaching $7.8 billion year-to-date, 19% ahead of the previous year's pace.
