Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Adolis García will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a latissimus dorsi injury. The team announced Thursday that García will undergo surgical repair on Wednesday, with an estimated recovery period of six to eight months that should allow him to be ready for the 2027 season opener.
García, 33, initially suffered the injury on June 10 during a game in Toronto, when the Phillies initially described it as a pulled muscle in his right shoulder. The injury occurred after he made consecutive throws to home plate on sacrifice flies. The two-time All-Star had signed a one-year, $10 million contract with Philadelphia in December following six seasons with the Texas Rangers, and began his Major League career with St. Louis in 2018.
At the time of his injury, García was batting .195 with a .270 on-base percentage through 67 games, contributing seven home runs, 21 RBIs, and three steals. To address the roster vacancy, the Phillies made several moves Thursday. The team recalled right-handed pitcher Seth Johnson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he posted a 1.33 ERA with six saves in 24 relief appearances. They also selected the contract of right-hander Bryse Wilson from Lehigh Valley, while optioning left-handed pitcher Tanner Banks to the affiliate.
Wilson, who compiled a 3-5 record and 6.29 ERA in 12 appearances with Lehigh Valley, brings previous Major League experience from his time with the Chicago White Sox last season. In 163 career MLB appearances, Wilson holds a 20-23 record and 4.82 ERA. Banks, who was designated for assignment, posted a 0-4 record with a 5.86 ERA in 26 games with Philadelphia this season.

Why This Matters
This injury significantly impacts the Phillies' outfield depth during a critical period of the season. García, a two-time All-Star signed to a $10 million contract, was expected to contribute offensively despite his slow start at the plate. The team's response—recalling Seth Johnson and selecting Bryse Wilson's contract—reveals their roster flexibility strategy and highlights the importance of maintaining a well-stocked Triple-A pipeline. For fantasy baseball players and fans tracking the 2027 season outlook, García's six-to-eight-month recovery timeline creates both uncertainty and opportunity for roster planning.
