Justin Gaethje shocks Ilia Topuria to win UFC lightweight title at historic White House event

Justin Gaethje pulled off one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, defeating heavily favoured Ilia Topuria to claim the undisputed lightweight championship in a historic event held on the South Lawn of the White House on 15 June 2026.

The 37-year-old American stopped the Georgian-Spanish fighter at the end of the fourth round when Topuria's corner retired him on his stool, marking the first defeat in Topuria's 18-fight career. Gaethje, who entered as a significant underdog, controlled the fight after the opening round, repeatedly hurting Topuria with powerful strikes. Despite being dropped by body shots in the second round, Gaethje recovered to dominate, breaking Topuria down with a huge right hand before continuing with uppercuts and knees that caused visible swelling and cuts. A doctor's examination before the fourth round showed the damage was too severe for Topuria to continue.

The unprecedented UFC Freedom 250 event took place during celebrations marking both President Donald Trump's 80th birthday and 250 years of American independence. With approximately 4,300 attendees on the South Lawn—primarily US military members who chanted "USA" throughout—and a further 85,000 watching from the nearby Ellipse park, the show marked the first professional sporting event ever held on White House grounds. President Trump and UFC president Dana White watched octagon-side as fighters walked out from inside the White House, with Gaethje beginning his walkout from the Oval Office past portraits of previous presidents. The Marine Band serenaded fighters during their entrances, and US Air Force jets flew overhead during the national anthem.

After his victory, Gaethje received a commemorative red, white and blue belt and performed his signature backflip from the cage before shaking hands with Trump. In his post-fight interview, he referenced the American underdog spirit, telling the crowd: "I'm from America, 250 years ago we were way bigger than 6-1 dogs, and look at us thriving now." He also paid tribute to military service members, saying "To all the current, former and future military service members, thank you so much."

In the co-main event, heavyweight fighter Ciryl Gane defeated Alex Pereira with a second-round stoppage, ending Pereira's bid to become the UFC's first three-division champion. Despite weather concerns with thunderstorms in Washington DC threatening delays, the event was postponed by approximately 30 minutes before running smoothly throughout the evening.
