Former Iona College basketball player Adam Njie Jr. has been declared permanently ineligible for NCAA competition after an NCAA Division I infractions committee panel determined he violated rules related to a point-shaving scheme. Although Njie claimed he never actually followed through on his agreements to manipulate game outcomes, the NCAA found him in violation based on his communications with a bettor and the sharing of game information.
Njie confirmed to NCAA investigators that he told a bettor he would deliberately underperform in the first half of an Iona-Rice game on December 1, 2024, though he stated he did not actually execute the plan. The bettor had placed three bets totaling $15,500 on Rice to cover the first-half point spread. Njie subsequently told the same bettor that he would throw the first half of Iona's December 6, 2024 game against Sacred Heart to compensate for the bettor's losses, claiming this agreement came after he was threatened with bodily harm. Again, he said he did not follow through.
Digital evidence confirmed that Njie shared information with the bettor prior to both games. The NCAA treats the sharing of information with bettors identically to actual point-shaving, regardless of whether the player ultimately manipulates the game. This policy applies equally to both completed and attempted violations.
Why This Matters
This case underscores the NCAA's zero-tolerance stance on point-shaving conspiracies: even agreeing to manipulate games and sharing information with bettors results in permanent ineligibility, regardless of whether the player actually executes the scheme. For college athletes, this establishes that intent and communication alone—without follow-through—carry severe career-ending consequences. Institutional compliance programs and student-athlete education must emphasize that any involvement with betting syndicates, from information-sharing to threatened compliance, triggers permanent sanctions.
