BBC to Cut 550 Jobs in First Phase of £500m Savings Plan

The BBC has announced 550 job cuts across news, local divisions in England, and TV and radio content as the first step in a wider plan to save £500m over the next two years. Interim BBC News chief Jonathan Munro outlined a series of changes in an email to staff, including programme cancellations, presenter reshuffles and team mergers, as the corporation seeks to reduce costs and adapt to changing audience habits.

Among the most significant changes are the end of Radio 4's The World Tonight, reductions in the number of permanent presenters on Today from five to four from September, and the disappearance of BBC One's Sunday morning Breakfast programme. The production teams behind Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg and Newsnight are also set to merge, while some weekend television news production will be shared between the BBC News Channel and BBC One bulletins.

The broadcaster said the news division alone will lose 200 jobs, delivering about £25m in savings, while the wider savings package announced on Wednesday is intended to account for about £160m of the overall target. BBC director-general Matt Brittin said the broader programme could ultimately reduce headcount by 1,800 to 2,000 roles, with further measures expected in the months ahead, including around 700 job losses in corporate divisions.

Other proposals include ending several Radio 4 and World Service programmes, reducing the volume of original TV and audio output, moving Friday's edition of Newsnight to a 19:00 slot on BBC Two, and running the news website's InDepth section with a smaller team. Union leaders said the cuts would be damaging for audiences and staff, and questioned the timing as the BBC approaches renewal of its Royal Charter in 2027.
