Joao Pinheiro to Officiate Switzerland vs Bosnia and Herzegovina World Cup Clash

The World Cup Group B continues with its second round of fixtures tonight as Switzerland take on Bosnia and Herzegovina at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles. Both teams are seeking their first win of the tournament after securing a single point each in their opening matches.

Portuguese referee Joao Pinheiro has been appointed as the match official for this crucial encounter. Pinheiro brings extensive experience from Portugal's Primeira Liga, the Champions League, the Europa League, and Tottenham Hotspur's 2025 Super Cup defeat against Paris Saint Germain. Though this will be his first appearance at the World Cup, he has been on FIFA's international referees list since 2019 and officiated his first senior international match that same year between Brazil and Panama.

Known for his disciplined approach, Pinheiro has shown 1,980 yellow cards and 45 red cards across 440 career matches, averaging approximately five yellow cards per game. He is also familiar with high-profile players through his work in the Saudi Pro League and Egyptian Premier League.

Pinheiro will be assisted by fellow Portuguese officials Bruno Jesus and Luciano Maia on the sidelines, with Tiago Martins serving as Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The officiating team is completed by Japanese fourth official Yusuke Araki and reserve assistant referee Jun Mihara.

Both Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina drew their opening Group B matches. Switzerland were held 1-1 by Qatar after taking an early lead through a Breel Embolo penalty, only for Miro Muheim's late equaliser to deny them victory. Bosnia faced a similar fate against hosts Canada, scoring first before conceding a 78th-minute leveller. With qualification from the group stages potentially on the line, both sides will be pushing for their first three points of the tournament.
