The York Revolution, a minor-league independent baseball team in Pennsylvania, forfeited its Pride Night game on Thursday after several players refused to wear uniforms featuring rainbow-patterned sleeves. The team announced the decision Wednesday, choosing to cancel the matchup against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs rather than compel players to participate in the themed uniforms.
According to team President and General Manager Ben Shipley, fewer than nine players on the 28-man roster—the minimum required to field a lineup—were willing to wear the Pride Night jerseys. Despite an unprecedented team meeting where Shipley attempted to persuade players to participate, he was unable to secure sufficient agreement. "I was just asking for tolerance from the team, and they were unwilling to navigate that with me," Shipley told NBC News. The team noted that forcing players to wear uniforms they opposed would have compromised the spirit of Pride Night.
The Revolution emphasized that the cancellation reflected respect for both the LGBTQIA+ community and the broader York community. "The club decided that hosting the event is more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they are not comfortable with and playing the game," the team stated. The 11th annual Pride Night celebration proceeded as scheduled at WellSpan Park with other festivities including music, fan batting practice, and on-field activities, all free of charge. Tickets for the forfeited game could be redeemed for future matches.
In response to the incident, the Revolution made a $10,000 donation to the Rainbow Rose Center, which serves the LGBTQIA+ community in York and Adams Counties, describing it as "support for our LGBTQIA+ representing partners." The team also publicly criticized its own players, stating that the refusal to wear the uniforms was "completely inconsistent with our vision as the Most Welcoming Place in York."
The York incident occurred days after a similar controversy involving the San Francisco Giants, where pitchers Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker wrote Bible verses on their Pride Night caps, while pitcher Sam Hentges declined to wear the cap entirely. Major League Baseball subsequently warned players against defacing uniforms. The York Revolution indicated this was not unprecedented, noting that seven players had refused to participate in the previous year's Pride Night, though the team played the game anyway without publicizing the matter.
Why This Matters
This incident highlights the ongoing tension between corporate diversity initiatives and individual conscience in professional sports. The York Revolution's decision to forfeit rather than mandate participation reveals how teams navigate competing values when inclusion efforts conflict with player beliefs. The outcome—canceling the game while preserving the celebration—offers a precedent for how organizations might handle similar disputes, though it raises questions about whether symbolic gestures like Pride Night remain meaningful when the sport itself cannot be played. The $10,000 donation demonstrates accountability to the community, but the underlying refusal by 9+ players to participate signals deeper ideological divisions within the sports industry that may resurface in future Pride-related events.
