Francisco "Lu Olo" Guterres, the former President of East Timor and a leading figure in the country's struggle for independence, has died at the age of 71. Guterres, who led the Fretilin political party for decades, was a symbol of the nation's enduring fight for self-determination and its transition to democracy. His death was announced by party officials on June 22, 2026, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the country and the international community.

As President from 2017 to 2022, Guterres worked to strengthen democratic institutions and promote national unity in a country still healing from decades of conflict. Prior to his presidency, he served as the President of the National Parliament and was a key voice in East Timor's resistance against Indonesian occupation. Born on September 3, 1954, in Laleia, he joined the resistance movement at a young age and later became a founding member of Fretilin.
