Pakistan Cricket Board blocks defending over-50s team from India tournament
Pakistan's Cricket Board has blocked its defending champion over-50s team from participating in the International Masters Cricket World Cup in India next January, despite visa and security assurances from Indian organisers. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who heads the PCB, denied permission, citing strained India-Pakistan relations.
Quick Facts
- PCB denied permission for over-50s team to participate in tournament
- PVCA withdrew from International Masters Cricket World Cup
- PVCA notified organisers of withdrawal
- Indian hosts provided visa and security assurances
- PVCA sought approval from PCB and Foreign Affairs and Interior Ministries

The Pakistan Cricket Board has denied permission for its over-50s cricket team to compete in the International Masters Cricket World Cup scheduled for January 2027 in India. The decision comes despite Pakistan winning the previous edition of the tournament in Sri Lanka in 2025 and despite assurances from Indian organisers regarding visa and high-level security arrangements for the visiting team.
Fawad Ijaz, head of the Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association (PVCA), announced the withdrawal on 21 October 2026. He stated that the PVCA had sought approval from the PCB and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior after receiving formal assurances from Indian hosts and tournament organisers about visa processing and security provisions. However, Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan's interior minister who also chairs the PCB, declined to grant the team permission to travel to India.
Ijaz confirmed the PVCA had notified tournament organisers of the withdrawal so they could arrange a replacement team. The decision reflects the broader pattern of India-Pakistan relations: the two nations play cricket against each other only in multi-nation tournaments and at neutral venues, not in bilateral series. Pakistan's hockey federation similarly declined to travel to India for the Asian Champions Trophy earlier this year, leading to Bangladesh's inclusion as a replacement.
Bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan has been suspended since 2008. India's men's team last played Pakistan during the 2008 Asia Cup in Pakistan; bilateral Test and One Day International series were last held in 2005–06. The suspension followed diplomatic tensions, particularly after the November 2008 Mumbai attacks.
Why This Matters
The PCB's decision blocks participation in a tournament Pakistan won in 2025, reducing bilateral sports engagement between two countries with suspended cricket relations since 2008. The withdrawal affects 15–20 veteran players and follows a pattern of India-Pakistan non-engagement in bilateral sporting events; similar decisions by Pakistan's hockey federation have disrupted Asian sporting schedules and required tournament replacements. The decision reflects broader diplomatic constraints on official travel between the two nations, with measurable impact on international masters cricket participation and inter-Asian sporting calendar stability.
