Kevin Keegan, Liverpool and Newcastle legend, dies at 75 after cancer battle

Kevin Keegan, the former England captain and manager who was one of English football's most decorated players, died on 20 July 2026 at age 75 after battling stage four cancer. His family confirmed he passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters. Keegan had been diagnosed with stage four cancer in January 2026 and publicly revealed his condition in June, seven weeks before his death.

Keegan enjoyed a stellar playing career spanning from 1968 to 1984, making nearly 750 club appearances. He won the Ballon d'Or twice, in 1978 and 1979 while playing for Hamburg—a distinction achieved by only four Englishmen and making him the only British player to win the award twice. At Liverpool, where he played from 1971 to 1977, Keegan won three First Division titles, the FA Cup, two UEFA Cups, and the 1977 European Cup. He later played for Hamburg (1977–1980), Southampton, and Newcastle. For England, Keegan earned 63 caps, scoring 21 goals, and served as captain during the 1980 Euros and at the 1982 World Cup.

As a manager, Keegan guided Newcastle from near-relegation to the top flight, establishing them as Premier League contenders under the nickname "The Entertainers." His side came within four points of winning the 1995–96 Premier League title before Manchester United overtook them in a dramatic finish. Keegan later managed Fulham (1997–1999), England (1999–2000), and Manchester City (2001–2005), returning for a brief second spell at Newcastle in 2008. His England tenure ended after a 1-0 defeat to Germany at Wembley Stadium in the last match played at the old venue, a World Cup qualifier.

Beyond football, Keegan became one of Britain's first sporting celebrities during the 1970s, appearing in advertising campaigns and recording music. His iconic permed haircut was copied across Europe. Clubs worldwide paid tribute: Liverpool described him as a hero whose legacy would be forever etched in their history; Newcastle called him the "beating heart" of the club for generations of supporters; Hamburg honoured his contribution during the 1978–79 Bundesliga championship season. The Football Association announced a full tribute would be held during England's Nations League match against Spain at Wembley in September.
