Japan's women's volleyball team defeated Serbia 3-2 in the Volleyball Nations League on 17 June in Pasay City, Philippines, recovering from a difficult match to extend its winning run to five games. The world No. 4 side took the contest 20-25, 26-24, 18-25, 32-30, 15-7 after trailing 1-2 in sets and surviving a tense fourth set in which Serbia held match point.
The match drew attention for a remarkable defensive sequence by Japan's Yoshino Sato. Early in the first set, with Japan trailing 12-15, Sato kept a rally alive by digging a low ball off a Serbian block and then, with her right hand, sending it back across the net. She then reacted again to a right-side attack from Serbia's Anja Zubic and produced a successful block that earned Japan the point.
Volleyball World, the official media outlet associated with the FIVB, praised the play on social media, asking: "How did Yoshino pull that off?" Local commentary also highlighted the effort as an extraordinary save. Sato finished with 12 points, ranking third on the team, and added four service points as Japan continued its strong start to the tournament.
Japan had entered the Philippines leg on the back of four straight wins in the Canada round and remains in contention for a medal after finishing the previous phase strongly. The result against Serbia underlined both Japan's resilience in a five-set battle and the impact of Sato's all-around play.
